Renaming
Smart Renaming
Build readable filenames from Date, Website, and Name, then choose the order that makes sense for how you search later.
Give files names you can recognize later, instead of final_final_2_actual.pdf.

The problem
Many downloads arrive with names that feel like they were labeled during a power outage. You recognize them today. Next month, they become folder archaeology.
How Downloads Butler handles it
- Downloads Butler cleans noisy filenames, keeps useful extensions, and can build names from simple parts.
- Home Renaming keeps the daily controls simple: Date, Website, and Name.
- The deeper renaming settings can support richer styles without making the homepage controls feel like a cockpit.
What you control
- Keep the original filename when you want no changes.
- Add Date, Website, and Name parts.
- Move parts left or right to set the filename order.
- Preserve file extensions safely. Nobody wants a PDF wearing a mystery hat.
Practical examples
- download (12).pdf can become 2026-05-03_ChatGPT_Report.pdf.
- invoice-final.pdf can keep its useful name while gaining source or date context.
- Source labels such as ChatGPT, GitHub, and Yahoo can become readable filename parts.
Local note
Renaming happens locally before Chrome saves the file. Downloads Butler does not need to upload file names to a server to make them readable.
