Sorting
Download Sorting
Choose where Chrome downloads should land by group, exact type, website/source, or your preferred order.
Sort downloads before they start nesting in your Downloads folder like raccoons in a garage.

The problem
Chrome is good at downloading files. It is less good at giving them a sensible home. Left alone, everything piles into Downloads until the folder becomes a museum of tiny regrets.
How Downloads Butler handles it
- Downloads Butler checks the file kind, source website, filename, extension, MIME type, and your active settings before Chrome writes the final name.
- Sorting can use broad groups like Documents and Images, exact types like PDF and ZIP, source folders like GitHub or ChatGPT, or a source-first order when that is how you think.
- The app suggests a Chrome-safe relative path, so downloads land inside your Downloads folder structure without needing a cloud service.
What you control
- Choose broad groups or exact file types.
- Choose whether group comes before website/source or website/source comes before group.
- Keep source-aware sorting independent from file type support.
- Change sorting without rebuilding your whole setup. Tiny mercy.
Practical examples
- PDFs from ChatGPT can land in Documents / ChatGPT.
- ZIP files from GitHub can land in Archives / GitHub or GitHub / Archives.
- Images can land in Images / the source website when source context is available.
Local note
Sorting decisions are made locally in Chrome. Your rules, recent decisions, and settings stay in local browser storage.

Renaming
Smart Renaming
Build readable filenames from Date, Website, and Name, then choose the order that makes sense for how you search later.
Source-aware
Source-Aware Folders
Group downloads by where they came from, even when the file type itself is not special.
Rules
Download Rules
Create rules for websites, file kinds, extensions, or filename patterns so repeat downloads follow repeat behavior.
